Kombucha is part of our happy world and we are enjoying our brews daily! Kelie is experimenting with a heating strip to speed up the fermentation process.
Kelie finished her Rose Window Shawl this week and it turned out beautifully! This is a semi circular shawl knitted in a gradient dyed yarn with over 2000 beads. It took a lot of focus and concentration but was worth it!
Nancy's working on a diagonal cowl using Noro Kibou and a mohair together. It's very fuzzy and soft and easy to work on. Noro Kibou is 24% Cotton/34% Wool/12% Silk and has 297 yards in the skein. The current knitalong at the store is using Kibou and is a top down raglan sweater. The pattern is from Knitting Pure & Simple #994 V Neck Neck Down Cardigan for Women. The sweater came out beautifully in the yarn, very lightweight and soft. It'll take 4 - 5 skeins of the Noro Kibou for this sweater.
Nancy and Kelie went to the University of San Diego to attend the Kyoto Prize Symposium featuring dyeing and weaving artist Fukumi Shimura from Japan. It was very inspiring to hear about her life and the processes she goes through to create her amazing kimonos. She uses natural dyes to dye the silk she uses to weave her extraordinary kimonos.
The Knitting Guild Association is coming to San Diego this summer July 22 - 25. Class registration is now open so sign up if you would like to attend any classes.
Kelie has discovered Navajo Knitting. Looks like it might be a fun thing to try on a cowl or other small project. She was also interested in Portuguese knitting and likes the look of the knitting pins.
Nancy talks about the 5th Annual Storytellers of San Diego Festival coming to Encinitas. It's a free event on March 21, from 10 am - 6 pm at the Encinitas Library on Cornish Drive. There will be professional storytellers telling tales of spinning, weaving, knitting, quilting and sewing. Sounds like a fun day for the whole family!
We had a lot of fun when Anzula came to Common Threads with her trunk show. The Knit Surfers are excited about the prospect of a retreat to Fresno to dye with Sabrina. Maybe this Spring?
